Jean Dolabella: Com certeza!. Eu tinha comprado o vinil do "Beneath The Remains" e estava ansioso pra ir ao show.

Jean has proved, since his first gig with Sepultura, that Andreas and Paulo Xisto had made the right choice for a substitute on the same level as Iggor Cavalera. In an exclusive interview to the Agenda do Headbanger blog, Jean talks about his first contact with Sepultura, their next record, his influences and side projects.

Agenda do Headbanger: In 1991, you watched in Uberlândia, your home town, your first Sepultura show. By that time you already were a Sepultura fan?

Jean Dolabella: Absolutely! I had bought the vinyl of "Beneath the Remains", and was eager to go to the show. It was very special, mainly because it was the first major Metal gig I had gone to in my life. So it was pretty remarkable

Agenda do Headbanger: How and when were your first contact with Sepultura?

Jean Dolabella: I used to live in L.A. Sepultura was touring the U.S. and Stanley Soares, the PA technician, had just started working with them, I knew Stanley from BH and I've worked with him both in studio and in live concerts. After the show I had a little chat with Andreas which have already have heard about me and my band.

Agenda do Headbanger: You have played with important names such as Tianastácia, Sem Misericórdia, Sônia Andrade, Scarceus and Udora (ex-Diesel). When you’ve played your first show with Sepultura, even having that much experience, were you still apprehensive?

Jean Dolabella: Absolutely the first show was not easy. I think that the great difficulty was to have in my head that I was playing with one of the biggest metal bands of the world and also substituting a drummer that was, and still is, extremely respected in the whole world including by me. Moreover, it had about 20 thousand people and MTV was broadcasting it..It was not really easy. But in the end things worked out fine.

Agenda do Headbanger: You are a drum teacher, graduated in the Music Academy, in Los Angeles. After that you've joined Sepultura, are you still teaching?

Jean Dolabella: Yes. I continue teaching here in BH. Besides, my father and I are running a "Cultural Space" and we have made a lot of events and workshops, not only mine but with several other artists

Agenda do Headbanger: About your side projects, you’ve played with Andreas Kisser in his solo project called "Hubris". Are you still working in the instrumental music project with the guitarist Augusto Nogueira? Do you have any other projects in mind?

Jean Dolabella: Hubris recording sessions were very special. It was the first time that I could record something with Andreas and I thought that the result was wonderful. The songs were strong and we felt a real good chemistry working together. My project with Augusto's been taking shape. We intent to release an album in the beginning of the next year. I also have another project with some old friends from Belo Horizonte that doesn't even have a name yet and no imminent recordings either

Agenda do Headbanger: Seems like one of your favorite bands is Meshuggah. Is the drummer Tomas Haake one of your influences?

Jean Dolabella: Meshuggah is a band that I admire a lot, but it’s not my favorite band. I don’t even have a favorite band. I’ve seen them live a couple of times and the quality of the musicians is really impressive. As I enjoy and listen to many kinds of music, I have some completely distinct influences. During a time, Tomas Haake was in fact an influence.

Agenda do Headbanger: On September 21st was born João, your second son. How can you conciliate music and your family?

Jean Dolabella: That's very hard for me. I'm a family man and I love to be near them. But I can conceal it very well. Only when the tours are too long, it feels harder to me. But besides that, it's ok. I can't have it all.

Agenda do Headbanger: How's the songwriting process for the next Sepultura album, set to be released in 2008?

Jean Dolabella: We are starting now in December. We have a few ideas, some riffs, but nothing very defined. I am very anxious to start! I’m certain that it’s going to be a wonderful experience.

Hey guys,

I'm spending my time here for the kids of Haiti.

I'm doing my part for a non-profit group that gives their time to
building oppurtunities for the kids in haiti. If anybody wants to donate then then please do so here:

They give kids in Haiti a positive outlook through education.

And yes, they're real.

Anything would be appreciated
